Neighbourhood

The Sun's nearest known stellar neighbor is a red dwarf star called Proxima Centauri. It is at a distance of 4.3 light years (the distance light travels in a year) away. That is 272, 298.8 times the distance between the Earth and the Sun.

I believe this was mentioned in the hitchhiker's guide. I believe that it was somewhere in that vicinity that the plans to destroy earth were stored.

When are we going to travel by light years already? I'm getting antsy.

Indeed. Though, I don't think “light speed travel” will be attractive even if we can achieve it. Who wants to wait 4 years to visit their cousin in Proxima Centauri?

What we really need is a system of instantaneous travel. You know, a system of bending space/time. The fastest way to travel is to already be there (or at least, to arrive as soon as you leave).
